The computer can be a very valuable tool when creating art but it's wise to remember that it's not creative by itself.

There are just so many neat things you can do with the aid of computers today. I use and recommend a number of programs when I create my digital art. My favourites pieces of software are; Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, Macromedia Flash, Ulead Gif Animator and Fractal eXtreme. With these programs I can do almost anything that I can dream up.

One of the best things about computers when it comes to art is their accuracy. If you are a perfectionist like me then you will be amazed at the level of detail achievable with some software. Added to this is the ability to undo at any time if you are not happy with something. Imagine painting a watercolour picture and being able to undo the last brushstroke if it wasn't perfect, well this is what you can do with computers!

But computers don't have all the answers. I have found that the best results can be achieved when an artwork contains both computer aided elements and parts created by hand. This way you are more likely to strike a pleasing balance between the mathematical precision of a computer and the natural imperfections of real life. A classic example of this would be a hand drawn cartoon coloured in Photoshop; the lines will have a beautiful rustic feel and this will be contrasted by colours with purity and intensity that could not be achieved by any natural method. Experimenting with new ways to bring the digital and the analogue together is the key to successful digital art.
